Review

“The Merida Big.Trail is going to be a lot of fun for someone getting their first proper mountain bike, or a rider looking for a trail hardtail without breaking the bank.”
– Mike Blewitt

Australian Mountain Bike Magazine

The Merida Big Trail 400 dials up the fun with the simple brilliance of a hardtail with long travel adventure. The Big Trail reignites a bike with modern trail geometry, big 29er wheels and long travel for grip and comfort. This bike is all about bringing the most out of a hardtail which is easy to set up, maintain, affordable and can be just as fun as a full suspension mountain bike.

The lightweight alloy frame with internally routed cables is paired with a Suntour XCR34 LOR Fork with 140mm travel and lockout for versatile trail capabilities. The modern trail geometry ensures that this bike can descend with speed even on technical trails and still climb with ease thanks to the central seating position over the bottom bracket. Ride aggressively on trails all day long with the 1×10 speed Shimano Deore drivetrain which is incredibly proficient on the trails Add in the Tektro Hydraulic Disc brakes for powerful braking and this bike is flat out fun, ready to corner with aggression and confidence. Spend all day riding with fixing points for two bottles and hidden rack, fender and kickstand mounts for anyone that wants to make this bike a capable commuter.

The 400 is nice step up from the Big Trail 200 with an upgraded fork and the addition of a dropper post. This is similar throughout the Big Trail range, where design concept is similar with a few spec adjustments. Move up the to Big Trail 500 and you get a RockShox Recon Silver RL fork and an 11 speed drivetrain. At the end of the day the 400 will tick a lot of boxes for most riders as it is bashful, big and bold for a modern ride that the recreational rider will thrive on.

Modern Trail Geometry

A long reach, paired with a slack 65.5 head angle and a steep seat angle make the BIG.TRAIL a solid descender even when the trail is full of roots and rocks, maintaining impressive climbing abilities, due to the central seating position over the bottom bracket. The extra short seat tube and low stand over height help create lots of space to manoeuvre the bike when the trail is tough but also allow for long travel dropper posts.

Boost Technology

The entire BIG.TRAIL range offers Boost technology at the front and rear. The shallower axle standard of 110 mm (front) and 148 mm (rear) allows for a wider spoke angle, resulting in a stiffer and stronger wheel, hugely beneficial on trail hardtails with 29er wheels.

Tyre Clearance

Our BIG.TRAIL rolls on 29er wheels and has tyre clearance for up to 2.5 trail tyres. The combination of 29er wheels and 2.5 tyres offer plenty or corner and climbing grip, while the big tyre volume and the 29er rolling over ability give our trail hardtail extra comfort and stability.
